ICA Canada would like to congratulate our colleague Saaya
Tema Karmushu,
from ICA Kenya, on receiving the Jacques
Hébert Global Citizenship from Canada World Youth.
Saaya is the project coordinator of the Il Ngwesi HIV/AIDS Intervention,
a partnership between ICA Canada and ICA Kenya. The following video highlights
Saaya's involvement with Il Ngwesi:
Thanks, in part, to Saaya's dedication and hard work:
1,800 people have been tested for HIV
200 peer educators are now offering HIV/AIDS awareness sessions in their villages
6 local HIV/AIDS Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) counsellors have been trained
88 community care coalition members have been trained to provide support to those testing positive for HIV/AIDS
Family Health International has provided funding for local staff salaries and an office for the continuation of the project
Due to its overwhelming success, the
Il Ngwesi HIV/AIDS Intervention is being considered a model project for
community HIV/AIDS initiatives by the Kenyan Ministry of Health!
“Creating positive social change in
Canada and Africa”
"...the Institute of Cultural Affairs, a non-governmental
organization, has set up one of the few programs in East Africa to deal
specifically with
AIDS and the Masai."

Mitchell recently got a first-hand look at ICA's HIV/AIDS Prevention Program
in Mto wa Mbu, Tanzania. Read her insightful article here
